Best Foods to Eat for A Cold
Post date: January 22nd, 2009If you have a cold, you should know that there are several different types of foods you can and should eat. These types of foods are foods that can help soothe your feeling most especially if the type of cold that you have is one that clogs your nose and makes it difficult for you to actually breathe.
If you have a cold, you should definitely eat foods that are rich vitamin c like fruits specifically oranges. Vitamin C is famous for combating sickness like colds and the like. When you have a cold, chances are your head feels stuffed and you feel weak. It is ideal for you to eat soft foods like soups and noodles as this could help you breathe well.
You should also avoid eating foods that can make you feel stuffed or foods that are spicy. Although spicy foods could help release the clog in your nose, chances are it could worsen your situation as spicy foods could be painful to the throat.
It is also best if you eat more of vegetables to keep you energized. If your taste buds aren’t functioning well because of your cold, chances are you wouldn’t have the appetite to eat. If this is case, you can simply opt to eat light foods like oatmeal, a slice of bread with very light spread or some crackers.
Avoid eating anything sweet and salty and avoid eating nuts when you have a cold. The best foods to eat also include liquids like milk, and fresh fruit juices. This is because fresh fruit juices and liquids help in releasing the clog in your nose.
If you have a hard time breathing, you should also eat foods that can be mixed with honey. These types of foods could be mixed with a cup or two of honey and could ease discomfort and soothe your condition.
Soups, liquids, and honey are the best types of foods to eat when you have colds. Of course don’t indulge too much on the bad stuff in order to soothe your cold.

You shouldn’t drink milk when you have a cold because it will increase the mucus in your throat/nose.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Anything with dairy should be sworn off until the cold has passed!

You two are actually 100 percent wrong,

According to several scientific sources, it does not: “Drink dairy products like cream based soups, ice cream, pudding or milk as they don’t increase phlegm or upper respiratory tract symptoms.”

Not only is this article incorrect in many ways it is incomplete.
Please take down this dreadful piece of misinformation.

The only think I’ve ever found that helped me cope with a bad cold is eating spicy foods and also eating honey in place of spicy foods when there is a sore throat. May be we are all different and there is no one best approach to coping with a cold. One thing is for sure, cold meds have never helped me and I avoid those because they make me feel 10x worse (and then I still have the cold on top of that). I also think that drinks with a lot of sugar like OJ are not useful because the sugar creates an added tiredness.
