authoradmin | November 11, 2008

Our diet or the food that we take in can make or break any fitness program that we have. If you’re concerned about having an effective anti-aging diet, all the more that you must be conscious about the type of food that you indulge in. There is a diet that helps delay the onset of aging and learning about it can help you to easily beat the premature wrinkles and prevent sagging skin.

The best foods to eat for anti aging:

Fruits and vegetables. Rich in vitamins and minerals, including fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet everyday will give you the essential nutrients that you need to maintain overall health.  The more colorful the better.  Blueberries, goji berries, and acai berries.  The antioxidants found in this group helps prevent and repair the damage brought about by free radicals. Free radicals damage the cells. Rich sources of antioxidants are cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, turnip, brussels sprouts, radish and watercress as well as avocado (rich in vitamin E, which is essential in maintaining skin health) and berries.

Complex carbohydrates. Its high fiber content aids in proper digestion. Complex carbohydrates are rich in B vitamins and iron which are essential in keeping you energized. When you’re energetic and active, you can perform more activities including exercise. Go for rice and pasta if you need energy boost.

Nuts. Snack up on nuts or sprinkle it on your salads and recipes, it will do you good. It’s because nuts aid in the proper function of your digestive and immune system and improve skin health. It is also rich in potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and selenium all of which help in preventing cancer. Brazil nuts and walnuts are best. AVOID rancid nuts though. The latter has been linked to enhancing free radicals.

Best foods to eat for breakfast

authoradmin | October 16, 2008

Hello-

You’ve heard it a thousand times before - breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Add to that there are some better foods to eat for breakfast that most sugary cereals.  While we would all like to eat cold pizza and orange juice for breakfast like in our college days, pizza is not one of the best foods to eat for breakfast.

You want to make sure you get some whole grain, fruits and protein to start your day.  Eating these in combination will keep you fuller longer and get you in the right stand of mind to guide your eating habits for the rest of the day.

You can start with an apple or orange or some frozen blueberries and make a healthy protein shake.  You could mix some low fat yogurt and frozen blueberries and enjoy a tasty breakfast.  Add some whole grain toast and you have extra fiber that gives you that fullness feeling that keeps you from overeating.

Don’t forget to drink a couple of glasses of water.  Your body is dehydrated from sleeping so you need some water to keep your body running smoothly.

Other options for best foods include oatmeal.  You could make some steel cut oats also called Irish oatmeal some times.  Add some frozen blueberries and walnuts and a dash of cinnamon and you have a very healthy breakfast meal recipe.

And contrary to what you may have heard, eggs are good for breakfast.  They are loaded with protein and healthy fats.  You can grill some Virginia brand ham and add a little bit of honey to give it a sweet taste and then scramble some eggs with it and add some whole grain wheat toast with a glass of low fat milk and a glass of orange juice and you have a great breakfast that will keep you full for hours.

There you go, those are some of the best foods to eat for breakfast.  Enjoy!

Are avocados one of the best foods to eat?

authoradmin | August 11, 2008

Hello-

One food that I have not written about on Best Foods to Eat is avocados.  Are they one of the best foods to eat?  This article will talk more about the tasty avocado and let you know if you should be adding this fruit to your diet.  Yes, it is a fruit and not a vegetable.  :o)

What is the nutritional value of the avocado?

Here’s what Wikipedia says:

“A whole medium avocado contains approximately 21 grams of fat, though most of it is monounsaturated fat. Avocados also have 60% more potassium than bananas. They are rich in B vitamins, as well as vitamin E and vitamin K. They have the highest fiber content of any fruit - including 75% insoluble and 25% soluble fiber.” Source

Here’s how avocados are good for your health:

Avocados and Heart Disease:

* Avocados can help consumers meet the dietary guidelines of the American Heart Association, which are to eat a diet that is low to moderate in fat. The fats should be primarily unsaturated and low in saturated fat and cholesterol. The avocado is virtually the only fruit that has monounsaturated fat.
* Avocados help assist consumers in meeting a major dietary goal of reducing saturated fat in the diet, when they are consumed in place of saturated-fat containing foods.

Avocado and Weight Loss/Maintenance:

* When used instead of other fats, avocados contribute nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients and can be part of a calorie-reduced diet.
* Avocados can be a satisfying addition to a calorie-reduced diet, when they are eaten in lieu of other fats.

* When enjoyed in place of other fats, avocados can be a satisfying addition to a calorie-controlled diet. Source

How to pick an avocado:

“A ripe, ready to eat avocado is slightly soft but should have no dark sunken spots or cracks. If the avocado has a slight neck, rather than being rounded on top, it was probably tree ripened and will have better flavor. A firmer, less mature fruit can be ripened at home and will be less likely to have bruises. The Hass avocado weighs about 8 ounces on average and has a pebbled dark green or black skin, while the Fuerte avocado has smoother, brighter green skin. Avoid Fuertes with skin that is too light and bright. Florida avocados, which can be as large as 5 pounds, have less fat and calories, but their taste is not as rich as California varieties.

A firm avocado will ripen in a paper bag or in a fruit basket at room temperature within a few days. As the fruit ripens, the skin will turn darker. Avocados should not be refrigerated until they are ripe. Once ripe, they can be kept refrigerated for up to a week. If you are refrigerating a whole avocado, it is best to keep it whole and not slice it in order to avoid browning that occurs when the flesh is exposed to air.

If you have used a portion of a ripe avocado, it is best to store the remainder in the refrigerator. Store in a plastic bag, wrap with plastic wrap, or place on a plate and cover with plastic wrap. Sprinkling the exposed surface(s) with lemon juice will help to prevent the browning that can occur when the flesh comes in contact with oxygen in the air. ” Source

All that being said, I would rate the avocado as one of the better foods to eat but would hesitate to call it one of the best foods to eat.  When you compare it to the goji berry or the acai berry, the avocado would not be considered one of the best.  But it does have its place in your diet.

It can help you meet your good fats requirement.

It can also help you with your heart as noted above.

I really like adding some to my burger and in a spicy guacamole dip.  :o)

So enjoy yourself a nice avocado when you get the chance.

Thanks for reading.

Have a great day!

Best foods to eat to detox your body

authoradmin | August 4, 2008

Hello-

If you are concerned about all the processed foods you are putting in your body and what all those toxins are doing to you, this post is for you.

I’m going to give you some tips on the best foods to eat to detox your body and what foods to avoid when going through a detox program.

If you are new to the whole idea of detoxifying your body, then you will want to start off small and manipulate your diet by adding essential body detox foods. Of course, any time you go forth with a home detox program, you do not want to shock your system by jumping in with radical food changes but rather slowly eliminate processed foods or those with refined sugars and add those with natural, organic ingredients.

Foods To Avoid When Detoxing Your Body

Basically, your diet should consist of foods that can be found in an organic form when possible or found in nature without any preservatives or processing. The processed foods with additives such as dyes, sugar, salt and extra fat are what turn your body temple into a place of mass destruction.

There are a number of dietary choices that you will need to eliminate from your life and it may take some time as you fight your addictions before your body stops craving them.

Anything with sugar should be shunned in your diet and this includes products with dextrose, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, turbinado, brown sugar and regular refined cane sugar. Artificial sugars are also considered taboo and you should instead turn to natural sweeteners such as raw honey or molasses.

Dairy and wheat products are not the best foods and should be avoided whenever possible as they can pollute the body when consumed in high quantities. There are acceptable substitutes that can provide the vitamins and minerals your body needs such as gluten-free grains and almond, soy or rice milk. Caffeine, alcohol, yeast, anything high in fat and (gasp) chocolate are also not on the list of approved body detox foods.

Best foods to eat to detox your body

Anything that can be found in nature such as nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, beans and grains such as rice or anything else that is gluten free. Of course, some of these foods are better than others so search for those with antioxidant properties and those with anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, body detox foods that will help you from the inside out with things such as common illnesses and free radicals.

Onions, garlic, colorful peppers, watermelon, pomegranate, blueberries, carrots, watermelon, broccoli, cauliflower and beets are just a sample of detoxifying vegetables and fruits. Really, virtually all fruits and vegetables are great foods but those full of color such as dark leafy spinach or bright red tomatoes are optimal.

The bottom line, when it comes to appropriate body detox foods, is that if a food product is made in a factory and processed in some way (besides simple flash freezing or canning of vegetables and fruits with water only), then it is not the right thing for your detoxifying diet. And don’t forget – drink plenty of water each day, as it is the ultimate fighter in the cleansing process.

Thanks for reading.

Have a great day!

Acai berry - one of the best foods to eat

authoradmin | July 15, 2008

Hello-

We all know that our health is the most important thing in life.  Without it, you won’t be able to accomplish anything in any other area of life. So, let’s talk about improving our health by eating and drinking more Acai berry juice - one of the best foods to eat.

One of Nature’s Most Powerful Foods

Most people have never heard of it, yet it’s one of the most incredibly powerful foods in existence. It’s called Acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee.)

When I first found out about this magical fruit, I was amazed at its nutritional value and raw power.

Here is a quick list of just some of the health benefits of the Acai:

• is packed with more antioxidants than any other food I’ve found (including pomegranate, blueberries, or wine) to help combat premature aging.

• has a near perfect essential amino acid complex and trace minerals that are vital to your body, especially your muscles

• contains essential healthy (monounsaturated) fats and fiber for various overall health benefits, and…

• it tastes great!

This one delicious addition to your mornings can help you look and feel healthier, younger, sexier, and even delay the aging process - among other specific health benefits. You may not be able to find actual Acai berries, but you can find it in liquid/juice form in stores or online.  You can find them at your grocery stores, places like Whole Foods, and/or health food stores.

Instead of coffee, tea or even other juices, I highly recommend that you drink at least one serving of Acai juice every morning. For just $2 to $3 per day, you can dramatically improve your health, and much cheaper than most medications you could need in the future - if your body doesn’t get the benefits that Acai can provide. It really is a no-brainer.

So start enjoying the Acai berry, one of the best foods to eat:

Best foods to eat for anti aging

authoradmin | July 7, 2008

It’s been said we are what we eat, and that sentiment definitely holds true when it comes to our skin. It’s our body’s biggest organ, and it deserves all the nutritional TLC we can give it. So take a look at what you’ve been feeding yourself, and therefore feeding your skin.

One the most important components of skin health is vitamin A, and probably one of the best sources of it is low-fat dairy products. It could be said the health of our skin depends on vitamin A. Low-fat yogurt is not only high in vitamin A, but also acidophilus, the “live” bacteria that is good for intestinal health. Turns out, it may also have an impact on the skin, since it aids in digestion. Other good sources of vitamin A include cod liver oil, sweet potatoes, carrots, leafy vegetables, and fortified breakfast cereals.

It’s important to also make sure you’re eating foods rich in antioxidants, such as blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and plums. The benefits of these foods for healthy skin are plentiful. The antioxidants and other phytochemicals in these fruits can protect the skin cells, so there is less chance for damage. This in turn guards against premature aging, and keeps skin looking younger longer. Other fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants include artichokes, black, red, and pinto beans, prunes, and pecans.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are essential to your skin. Include salmon, walnuts, canola oil, and flax seed. EFAs keep cell membranes healthy, and allow nutrients to pass through.

We also need healthy oils, which contain more than essential fatty acids. Eating good-quality oils helps keep skin lubricated and keeps it looking and feeling healthier overall. Look for oils that are cold pressed, such as olive or extra virgin oil. We only need about two tablespoons a day of healthy oils, so use wisely.

Selenium plays an important role in the health of skin cells. Turn to foods like Whole-wheat bread, muffins, and cereals; turkey, tuna and brazil nuts for this important nutrient. Recent studies show that if selenium levels are high, even skin damaged by the sun may only suffer minimal, if any, damage.

Choosing the whole grain versions of complex carbohydrates can have a significant effect on insulin levels. Processed and refined sugars can cause inflammation that may ultimately be linked to skin break outs.

Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties, and it protects the membrane of the cell. It may even help prevent or reduce skin cancer risks.

Water plays such an important role in your overall health, and it has a profound effect on your skin’s health as well. Well-hydrated skin is healthy and young-looking. It also helps move the toxins out of your system so they have less chance to do damage.

Eat healthier by eating more fruits and vegetables

authoradmin | June 20, 2008

Recent changes in food guidelines have meant an increase in the recommended daily consumption of fruits and vegetables.  That is because eating nutrient rich, low calorie, low fat foods such as fruits and vegetables, has been shown to have a strong impact on overall health.

In addition, high levels of fruits and vegetables in the diet has even been shown to help provide protection from a number of diseases and chronic conditions.  There are ongoing studies on the relationship between a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and prevention of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other conditions.  While there may not yet be conclusive proof of a link between fruits and vegetables and lower risk of disease, there is ample anecdotal evidence to suggest that a healthy diet leads to a healthy body.

One reason for the strong health benefits of fruits and vegetables is their strong antioxidant qualities.  Many fruits and vegetables are high in important antioxidant vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin A.  In addition, fruits and vegetables contain lots of other nutrients and trace elements that are important to the proper function of the body.

Choosing the best fruits and vegetables is important, both to your health and the health of your food budget.  We all have limited food budgets, and getting the best in terms of both taste and nutrition, is very important.

One way to get maximum value and maximum nutrition is to choose fresh, in season fruits and vegetables.  That is because fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables tend to be less expensive than their shipped counterparts.

If you have a farmers market or produce stand nearby, it can be an excellent source of the highest quality, lowest cost fruits and vegetables.  Summer produce stands are excellent sources of delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables.

In addition, buying fruits and vegetables as they come into season will instantly provide you with variety.  There are literally hundreds of different varieties of fruits and vegetables at the average grocery store, and they all have different growing season.  Buying the fresh in season fruits and vegetables is a great way to introduce yourself to some varieties you may never have tried before.

Of course there will be times when your favorite fruits and vegetables are not available locally.  In those cases, frozen and canned varieties can do just fine.  Just about every popular fruit and vegetable is available canned or frozen, and these can make wonderful, fast fruit salads or quick snacks.

It is important to choose fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors, and not only for ascetic reasons.  Different colored fruits and vegetables contain different types of nutrients, and different levels of nutrients, so eating a good variety of green, gold, orange and purple is the best way to ensure adequate levels of nutrition.

How you cook the vegetables you buy is important as well.  Over cooking can destroy many of the nutrients that make vegetables so healthy.  Fortunately, most vegetables can be cooked by quickly steaming them in the microwave or on the stovetop.

How those cooked vegetables are served can also have a significant impact on their healthiness.  Adding butter, margarine, oils or other fats to vegetables can quickly negate their health benefits.  Better choices for seasoning cooked vegetables include fruit juices and low fat yogurt.

Most nutrition experts recommend that everyone eat from 5 to 9 servings of fruits or vegetables every day.  While that may seem like an impossible goal, it is easier when you understand just what a serving consists of.  One serving of a fruit or vegetable can be one medium sized piece of fruit, one slice of melon, two small pieces of fruit, one cup of strawberries, one cup of grapes, one half cup of canned fruit, one half cup of fruit salad, one side salad or one half cup of fresh fruit juice.

With all these choices to choose from, it is easy to see why fruits and vegetables are such a popular part of a healthy diet.  No matter what your reason for pursuing healthy eating, fruits and vegetables are a healthy addition to any diet.

Best foods to eat to boost your immune system

authoradmin | June 3, 2008

Hello-

If you want to boost your immune system, what are some of the best foods to eat?

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is good for us.  It gives us energy, and it keeps our immune systems in good shape.  But there are certain foods that are especially good for our immune systems.  When we eat these immunity boosters on a regular basis, we have an easier time avoiding illness.  We can also fight it off more quickly when it does occur.  Here are some of the best immune system boosting foods to eat.

* Citrus fruits - When it comes to boosting our immune systems, one of the most important vitamins is Vitamin C.  Long hailed as our immune system’s best friend, it is crucial that we get an adequate amount of it each day.  Citrus fruits are the most recognizable food source of Vitamin C, and they have lots of it.  Lemons, oranges, and tangerines are some citrus fruits that are great for our immune systems.

* Raw vegetables - Vegetables have a number of nutrients that boost our immune systems.  These include Vitamin E and Beta Carotene.  But did you know that vegetables provide far greater benefits when eaten raw?  Cooking tends to leech the nutrients out of them.  If you can’t bear the thought of eating a particular vegetable raw, lightly steaming it will keep most of the nutrients intact.  The best vegetables for our immune systems are dark green and orange ones such as spinach, greens, sweet potatoes and carrots.

* Nuts and seeds - These make tasty snacks, and they have great nutritional value.  Sunflower seeds and almonds are great sources of Vitamin E.  A daily serving of Brazil nuts gives us more than enough selenium.  And a number of nuts and seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been proven to increase the activity of white blood cells and speed up healing.

* Water - Water is a drink, not a food, but getting enough of it is very important to our immune systems.  Water cleanses our bodies of impurities, allowing our immune systems to concentrate on fighting off germs.  It is very important, however, to make sure that the water you are drinking is of high quality.  Certain substances that are often found in water can actually be harmful to our immune systems.

* Herbs - There are a number of herbs that are good for our immune systems.  Some of them, such as garlic, are tasty as seasonings.  Some make a nice tea.  Others do not taste as good, but can be consumed in pill form.  Some of the best herbs for the immune system include the aforementioned garlic, astragalus, goldenseal, and olive leaf extract.

The immune system is crucial to our good health, so it is very important to take good care of it.  By including these foods in your diet on a regular basis, you can help keep your immune system running smoothly.

yayFOOD Review

authoradmin | May 25, 2008

Hello-

If you’re looking for a weight loss website, you have a lot of options. Some of these are naturally a lot better than others.

I had the pleasure of reviewing yayFOOD.com recently, and can tell you without doubt that this is one of the better sites out there.

To begin with, yayFOOD is a monthly membership, so there’s ongoing support. If you have any kind of question - motivational, exercise, nutrition, or anything in between - you’ll get an answer almost immediately.

This saves TONS of research time, and you know you’re getting the right answers from the start.

There’s also Coaches there that have different areas of expertise, including Rachel herself. See her picture below:

yayfood Rachel Rolfe before and after photo

They have meal plans there, so you don’t have to go in blind - although the beauty of this diet is that you can eat whatever you want.

It’s also very motivational, and they have different videos, songs, daily motivational tips to keep you on target.

You can keep a private or public journal, and check out other people’s journal entries and comment on them so there’s a real “community” feel.

There’s also tons of articles, reports, and recommended resources so that you’re completely knowledgeable about everything. These are updated frequently and new reports are added as people ask.

They also have contests sometimes, so that people can stay motivated and on top of their weight loss goals. The “Success Stories” section proves that quite a few people do meet those goals, too.

The only downside is that this is a monthly membership. I think it’s well worth it though, and there’s an 8 week no-questions-asked guarantee, so there’s really no risk on your part.

Overall, I’d highly recommend yayFOOD.

The best foods to eat are colorful

authoradmin | May 15, 2008

Hello-

The best foods to eat are colorful - How to Color Your Way to Daily Health

It’s important that we eat plenty of different fruits and vegetables every day. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. Fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other substances that are important for good health. Most fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories and are filling.

You’ve probably heard about the 5 A Day for Better Health program. It provides easy ways to add more fruits and vegetables into your daily eating patterns. It’s vital that we eat a wide variety of colorful orange/yellow, red, green, white, and blue/purple vegetables and fruit every day. By eating vegetables and fruit from each color group, you will benefit from the essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that each color group has to offer alone and in combination.

There’s several different yet simple ways to start incorporating vegetables and fruit into your familiar and favorite meals. You can begin your day with 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice, slice bananas or strawberries on top of your cereal, or have a salad with lunch and an apple for an afternoon snack. Include a vegetable with dinner and you already have about 5 cups of fruits and vegetables. You may even try adding a piece of fruit for a snack or an extra vegetable at dinner.

Don’t be afraid to try something new to increase your vegetable and fruit intake. There are so many choices when selecting fruits and vegetables. Kiwifruit, asparagus, and mango may become your new favorite. Keep things fresh and interesting by combining fruits and vegetables of different flavors and colors, like red grapes with pineapple chunks, or cucumbers and red peppers.

Get in the habit of keeping fruits and vegetables visible and easily accessible – you’ll tend to eat them more. Store cut and cleaned produce at eye-level in the refrigerator, or keep a big colorful bowl of fruit on the table.

The more color in your diet, the better. Add some color to your life.

Watermelons, one of the best citrus foods to eat

authoradmin | April 29, 2008

Hello-

Watermelons hold the honor of being among the most beloved of fruits all over the world. The sweet and juicy call of this delicious fruit is simply irresistible.

watermelon is one of the best citrus foods you can eat

Watermelons are an excellent source of vitamin C and a very good source of vitamin A , notably through its concentration of beta-carotene. Watermelons are filled with lycopene, a pigment, which imparts the red color to them. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that may help reduce the risks of cancer and other diseases. You can also find it in ketchup. The redder the watermelon, the more lycopene it contains.

You can even eat the water melon seeds if you want because they also contain some important nutrients. The seeds are rich in magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorous, and zinc.

If you’re having trouble getting your daily 64 ounces of water, you can drink fresh watermelon juice since it is about 90% water. Instead of buying the new vitamin water you see advertised on TV, you can drink watermelon juice and get more healthy nutrients and antioxidants.

Remember that next time you’re thirsty and looking for something sweet and delicious to drink.

Best Foods to Eat

Oatmeal is one of the best foods to eat

authoradmin | April 24, 2008

Hello-

oatmeal is one of the best foods to eat

You may or may not have heard this before but oatmeal is one of the best foods you can eat.

Eating 1.5 cups of cooked oatmeal provides 4.5 grams of fiber — enough to lower your cholesterol. To mix it up a little, try oat bran or cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran. Eat just one of these nutritional powerhouses and you’ll also get about 30 percent of the Daily Value (DV) for vitamin K, which is vital for healthy bones.

Oatmeal is excellent for breakfast or an anytime meal. Add skim milk and sweeten with dried fruit like bananas or apricots for a nutritional bounty. Oatmeal’s attributes promote slower and prolonged release of glucose into the blood system which enhances cognitive performance.

I add cinnamon, blueberries, and walnuts to my oatmeal to add even more fiber and some good fats.  You have to mix it up a little because eating oatmeal everyday can get dull after a while.  You need variety.

Eating a healthy breakfast will keep you from binging mid-morning or eating way too much at lunch because you’re ravenous. By satisfying your hunger in the right way, you’ll enjoy better concentration during those productive morning hours.

Try adding a bowl of oatmeal to your next breakfast.

Best foods to eat

Which foods are the best to eat

authoradmin | April 20, 2008

The question of what foods are healthy can often be quite a difficult one to answer.  The research often seems to be in conflict, The studies that say a particular food is great for you one day often turn around and warn against that very food the next day.  Sorting through all this clutter to find the real deal on nutrition and what foods are healthy can be difficult.

Dietary fads seem to come and go on an alarmingly regular basis as well.  The low fiber high fat diets of yesterday give way to low fat high protein diets, and the wheel just keeps rolling, with too little thought given to what foods are healthy.

Understanding your current diet

When evaluating your own diet, it is important to take a couple of steps back and evaluate your own health, including what you want to get out of your diet.  Knowing your own tastes and preferences, in addition to knowing which foods are healthy, will help you create a diet you can stick to for the rest of your life.

When choosing what foods are healthy, it is essential that you choose foods you actually like.  If you choose a list of healthy foods you hate, you will obviously have trouble sticking to your diet long term, and your overall health and fitness level will suffer as a result.  It is best to choose from the long list of healthy foods you already like, and to incorporate them into your diet for maximum benefit.

The importance of fruits and vegetables in the diet

Among the healthiest of all foods are fruits and vegetables.  There is a good reason that fruits and vegetables make up such a large part of the government’s new food pyramid.  The new government guidelines recommend that everyone eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day, but unfortunately most people fall far short of this important goal.  It is important, however, to incorporate as many fruits and vegetables into your diet as you possibly can.

Eating fruits and vegetables does not mean you are limited to simply eating pieces of fruit and raw carrots all day.  When choosing what foods are healthy, it is just as important to prepare them in new and interesting ways.  You can add fresh fruits to your favorite energy drink or smoothie, for instance, top your yogurt with strawberries or enjoy a sliced banana with your morning cereal.

Learn to think long term

This kind of variety is vital to the long term success of any diet.  It is not enough to simply know what foods are healthy.  It is vital to use that knowledge to create healthy meals that you and your family will love.

In addition to fruits and vegetables, of course, there are a wide variety of foods that are good for the body.  These excellent foods include whole grains, including whole wheat bread and crackers, low fat meats, chicken, turkey and other poultry products and fresh fish.  There are so many answers to the question of what foods are healthy that the hardest part may be choosing among them.

The best foods that help reduce asthma symptoms

Asthma symptoms can be at best annoying and at worst life threatening and the bad news is that cases of asthma are on the rise.  More and more children and adults are diagnosed with this condition every year, and asthma continues to be the most commonly diagnosed lung condition in the nation.

The good news, however, is that there is more and more interest in food that helps reduce asthma symptoms.  Scientists and researchers are increasingly interested in the role of diet in preventing and treating a host of diseases, and many studies are underway into the many ways in which diet influences asthma symptoms.

Diet and asthma

One recent study focused on the role of diet in young children with asthma.  The study focused on food that helps reduce asthma symptoms, and it found that those children who regularly consumed full fat milk, butter and similar dairy products were less likely to develop asthma.

In addition, the children who consumed these full fat dairy products, such as whole milk and butter, also experienced less wheezing than those children who did not consume such foods.  This study seems to suggest that dairy products are one type of food that helps reduce asthma symptoms.

Whole wheat and asthma

Another type of food that helps reduce asthma symptoms may be whole wheat bread and other foods containing whole grains.  These whole grain products are thought to help reduce the severity of asthma symptoms, and to help reduce the likelihood of asthma in children.

The same study found that fruit juice, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables eaten on a daily basis are another example of a food that helps reduce asthma symptoms.

Despite these promising studies, scientists are still unsure of the basic cause of asthma.  There are a number of studies that suggest that food allergies may play a role in triggering asthma attacks.  For those food allergy triggered attacks, it is important to find those foods that trigger the attacks, as well as finding food that helps reduce asthma symptoms.

Asthma and allergies

Once these dietary triggers are identified, it will be much easier to tailor the diet to avoid the bad foods and concentrate on that food which helps reduce asthma symptoms.

In some cases, asthma attacks can be triggered by food or drink that is very hot or very cold.  On occasion, asthma can also be triggered by overeating.  In addition, some people have asthma attacks that are triggered by reactions to common food preservatives, including the sulfites found in many processed meats and other foods.  Often, therefore, finding food that helps reduce asthma symptoms simply consists of avoiding these common asthma triggers.

While changes in diet and eating food that helps reduce asthma symptoms can be remarkably effective, such dietary changes should not be undertaken without the advice and consent of your family physician or pediatrician.  It is important that your doctor know what treatments you are taking, including not only medications but also dietary changes.  This knowledge will allow your doctor to more effectively tailor a treatment program to deal with your asthma condition.

Spinach - one of the best foods to eat

authoradmin | April 4, 2008

Spinach is believed to have originated in ancient Persia, the country that is now known as Iran. Spinach was introduced to China sometime in the seventh century when it was presented to China as a gift from the king of Nepal.

In Europe, spinach has a much shorter history than many other popular vegetables. Spinach was first introduced to Europe sometime in the 11th century, when the Moors introduced it into Spain. As a matter of fact for some time the English referred to spinach as the Spanish vegetable.

Spinach grows quite well in most temperate climates, and the Netherlands and United States are among the biggest commercial growers of spinach on the market today.

Major benefits of eating spinach

There are many reasons to enjoy the dark green leafy vegetable known as spinach. For many years spinach has been touted as a health food, and this superfood certainly lives up to its reputation. Spinach is a rich source of many important vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, iron, calcium and beta-carotene.

Spinach is also a rich source of dietary fiber, thought to play an important role in protecting the body from many forms of cancer. As a matter of fact, the compounds contained in spinach are being studied for their possible role in preventing many forms of cancer, including such major killers as lung cancer. One reason may be the high concentration of vitamin K found in spinach. Vitamin K has long been associated with cancer prevention, and spinach is one of the very best sources of this vital nutrient.

This possible role as a cancer preventative is only one of the healthful effects of spinach. In addition, spinach may also play an important role in protecting the heart and cardiovascular system from damage. Spinach should be a part of every diet, but it may be even more important to those at risk for heart disease and stroke.

Spinach has also shown real promise at preventing cataracts. Some studies have suggested that this eye protection is due to the high concentration of beta-carotene found in spinach. Beta-carotene is thought to play an important role in eye health, and this may mean that the consumption of spinach can help protect the eyes from cataracts and other common vision problems.

One other reason for the eye protecting benefits associated with spinach may be its high concentration of lutein and zeaxanthin. These important carotenoids, similar to beta-carotene, are not only strong antioxidant vitamins, but they are thought to help protect against cataracts as well.

Spinach in the diet is also thought to help control high levels of homocysteine in the bloodstream. Recent studies have shown that a diet high in vitamin C, folic acid, beta-carotene and other nutrients found in spinach had lower homocysteine levels in their blood.

Why you should eat spinach for your health

The vitamins contained in spinach are also thought to play a role in preventing macular degeneration and other aging related diseases of the eye. Macular degeneration is the most common eye diseases in the elderly, and spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables are thought to help protect the body from these degenerative conditions.

In addition to its value as a superfood, spinach is low in price, widely available, and useful in a great number of recipes. Spinach is delicious and nutritious, and there is no reason not to include it in a healthy diet.

When choosing spinach it is important to choose spinach with a vibrant color and leaves of the richest and darkest green. It is important to avoid spinach that shows signs of yellowing. The leaves of spinach should appear fresh and tender, and they should not be bruised or wilted. In addition, it is important to avoid spinach that has a slimy coating on it, as this can be a sign of decay.

Fresh spinach should be loosely packaged in a plastic bag, and it should be stored in the crisper in the refrigerator. Spinach kept in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator will keep for up to four days, but it is important to use it as quickly as possible to ensure both freshness and good taste.

Spinach should not be washed prior to storage, since the excess moisture could cause it to spoil prematurely. Cooked spinach does not keep well and should not be stored. While spinach can be frozen after it has been blanched for two minutes, frozen spinach will develop a very soft texture. For this reason frozen spinach should not be allowed to completely thaw before being cooked.

The benefits of eating the best foods

authoradmin | March 27, 2008

Hello-

Most people in the world today are understandably anxious to improve the quality of their diets, but in today’s fast food oriented world, this is easier said than done.  It can be quite a challenge to eat healthy with so many unhealthy choices stocking the supermarket shelves and the menus of restaurants.

When improving your diet, however, it is important to be persistent, and to learn as much as you can about how diet can affect health.  Many have long suspected that a good diet plays a vital role in good health, but many recent studies have shown that a good, balanced and healthy diet is much more important than even the experts ever suspected.

Creating an every day diet that is both healthy and easy to follow is one of the single most important things anyone can do to improve their overall health and well-being.  A good diet can improve not only the way we feel but the way we look as well.   Many who follow a healthy diet rich in the best foods are able to look far younger than their actual age, and this healthy aging is but one of the many benefits of a healthy diet.

Many in the world of medicine, science and nutrition have long understood the value of good nutrition to good health.  It would be virtually impossible to enjoy a healthy lifestyle over the long term without focusing on the foods you put into your body.  Eating a healthy and balanced diet is one of the simplest, yet also most effective, changes you can make to help ensure a healthy body and a healthy future.

However, the benefits of a healthy diet go much further than simply feeling better, losing weight and gaining a higher degree of fitness.  While things like weight loss and higher energy level are certainly worthy goals, proper nutrition can lead to a longer life, and many foods even have the ability to prevent many common diseases, including such killers as heart disease, stroke and even cancer.

Those are some important benefits to eating the best foods.

Til next time.  Have a healthy eating day!

Why are oranges one of the best foods to eat?

authoradmin | March 26, 2008

Hello-

You know that oranges are good for you but do you know why? Here’s some info about oranges and why this citrus fruit is one of the best foods for you to eat regularly:

Oranges

Origin: Orange trees grow in tropical locations around the world but they are best known in the southern and western parts of the United States. In the U.S., oranges are big business in Florida and California, as well as in Georgia and other southern states.

Major health benefits of oranges as part of a healthy diet

Oranges and other foods rich in antioxidant vitamins are being studied for their possible usefulness in preventing cancer and other diseases. In addition to their high content of healthful vitamin C, oranges contain more than 170 phytochemicals, including more than 20 compounds in the carotenoid family. These carotenoids have shown incredible promise at fighting many kinds of cancer, and oranges are the best single source of many of these compounds.

In addition to these carotenoids, oranges also contain important compounds called limonoids. It is these limonoids that give oranges and other citrus fruits their tangy flavor, and these compounds are thought to be strong anticancer agents. Oranges are among the richest sources of limonoids.

And of course the best-known benefit of oranges is its strong content of vitamin C. Vitamin C, in addition to its strong antioxidant properties and possible role in fighting cancer, has been studied for everything from treating colds and flu to helping cuts heal more quickly.

Oranges are perhaps the richest sources of vitamin C available, and the average sized orange contains an amazing 92% of the vitamin C needed in the daily diet. Vitamin C is the most prevalent water-soluble antioxidant vitamin in the body, and it has been shown to reduce the cell damage associated with aging and environmental pollution.

Additional information: As rich sources of vitamin C, phytonutrients and many other important vitamins, oranges are among the most important foods in the supermarket. In addition to being nutritious, oranges are delicious and inexpensive as well. It is no wonder oranges are being increasingly recognized as one of the most valuable superfoods.

Oranges are perhaps the best known of all superfoods. Just about everyone has enjoyed a delicious orange, and a glass of fresh 100% orange juice is one of the best and healthiest ways to start any day. A glass of orange juice with breakfast can get your day off to a great start while helping improve your health.

When choosing to drink orange juice, however, it is important to choose only those juices that are made with 100% real juice. Choosing juices with lower fruit content, or juices with added sugar or artificial ingredients, could reduce and possibly even eliminate, the awesome power of this superfood.
